HOW AN AGENT CAN MAKE OR BREAK A CAREER....
Former Bristol City left-winger Aaron Brown has today signed a one year deal with League Two outfit Lincoln City.
There's no denying that on his day Aaron Brown was one of and if not the best left wingers in Division 2 between 2002-04, but enough of those days to attract a transfer to a higher standard.
Brown made over 180 appearances for City in a 6 year spell after rising through the youth ranks and eventually left in the summer following City's play-off final defeat to Brighton in 2004. But it was the way he departed that has left City fans somewhat upset by his decision.
Bristol born Aaron was to play his final game on a March friday night against Rushden & Diamonds when he broke his leg in a 50/50 challenge against ex-Rovers right-back Marcus Bignot it would see him remain on the sidelines until the following Autumn.
City stuck by Brown and 3 months after that night the management offered him a new contract. But the loyalty wasn't repaid, Brown decided he could play at a higher level and would leave the team on under the bosman ruling.
You can't blame a player for wanting to further his career, especially after he had served many loyal years at the club from a young age, but many supporters felt that after such a sign of loyalty, and the risk of never being quite the same player, that he almost threw it back in the faces of Bristol City.
Since then Aaron Brown played only a handful of games for QPR in the Championship under Ian Holloway, so he did get the move he wanted, but was once again hampered by injury.
After an unsuccessful trial with Barnsley, Brown found himself at Swindon in which during his first 7 months they were relegated, at Ashton Gate, leading to Aaron Brown requesting a transfer as once again he needed to play at a higher level. It would be another year after that he'd move to Gillingham and a year later, the remaining years on his Gills contract cancelled, here we are.
Four summers after those contract talks see Bristol City planning a second assault on The Championship and Aaron Brown signing a one year deal at Lincoln City. Sadly one of the better graduates from the academy of his time became just another case of agents misguiding players, which happens too often these days. Maybe Richard Keogh could do with knowing about a certain Aaron Brown, it could just save a dormant career.
